The Water Quality and Nutrients Status in the Dungun River Basin, Terengganu

This study investigated the spatial variation of nitrogen (N)-based and phosphorus (P)-based nutrients together with water quality parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, chemical demand total suspended solids) in Dungun River basin, Terengganu. The Water Quality Index (WQI) river was applied according to Malaysian Department Environment (DOE-WQI) classified based on National Standard (NWQS). Results showed that major source deterioration basin most likely due effluent discharged from nearby palm oil factory. overall WQI mean value obtained 85.44%, which indicated a clean condition categorised into Class II NWQS classification. mass N:P ratio 19.8:1 algal growth generally controlled by P-based nutrients. Based this study, it is suggested continuous monitoring necessary be carried out for proper management basin.
